2011 Can. SF

Given that the CanadianSF Database has been having coding issues (though it now, at long last, seems to be accepting input again), and that there aren’t really any other breakdowns of published Canadian Spec Fic (that we know of) for the 2011 year, the Friends of the Merril Short Story Contest thought we’d help out during the Aurora season by putting together a list of Canadian Spec Fic publications for 2011.

But we need your help. Our list is by no means complete. If you have information, post it in the Comments field (of this page only please), e-mail it to us (at fomsscontest@gmail.com) or give us a heads-up on Twitter (@fomcontest). And if you can include a link to where that information is available (free to read, at Amazon, the publisher’s site, etc.), we’ll put that in the entry too. We’ll be building active links into the list as we go along. Please bear with us for the time being.

We’ve used as wide as possible a definition for Spec Fic in compiling this list: SF/F/H, Magic Realism, Slipstream, Fabulism, all are included. And we have included Spec Fic written for MG through Adult audiences, to be as inclusive as possible.

Please inform us of incorrect information as we would like to maintain an accurate list; if we have put a story in the wrong length category, or have made other mistakes, we’d like to know that sooner than later. And in any instance where there is a “[?]” it means we still need that information to complete the list, so if you know the relevant information, please share it.

Aurora selections to be put forth as nominations can be made from here, and the electronic voting is open until EoD (PST) March 31, 2012.

Also, please note, for the purposes of Aurora Award selections, that only material deemed “professional rate publication” – i.e. Semi-pro payment or better at 0.1/word and up for stories, and an advance paid for a published novel – is considered for the Professional category selections. Work sold for non-payment or token payment is only eligible for the Fan categories. We have listed work below regardless of whether it is paid publication or not in order to create as full a list as possible, but please be sure to enter your selections in the right category, or your votes may not be counted. We’re currently using an “ (+) ” in front of a listing to denote it as a Fan publication instead of a Professional listing.

And in order to reduce confusion when this list is used in conjunction with the CanadianSF Database, we have opted to use the ” (*) ” to represent an author’s preferred work as is the usual practice on nominating lists, and have changed the notation for Fan publications, as stated above, to ” (+) “.

One last note: the Aurora Awards count all forms of short fiction (novellas, novelettes and short fiction) under the same category.

Thanks to Dave Duncan, Susan J. Forest, Chadwick Ginther, Ada Hoffmann, Michael Kelly, Stephen Kotowych, Jessica Langer, Helen Marshall, Nina Munteanu, Clifford Samuels, Simon Strantzas, and Lorna Toolis for their help with compiling this list.

  1. If you’d like to include a link to Skeleton Leaves where some of the poems are posted, you can link to http://www.skeleton-leaves.net (and, yes, publisher is Kelp Queen Press).

Also, you can include for Helen Marshall:

2011 “The Oak Girl”, Tesseracts 15. [poem]
2011 “Skin”, Future Lovecraft, Innsmouth Free Press. [short story]
2011 “Beautiful Monster”, Paper Crow. [poem] (Fall Issue)
2011 “Leda’s Daughter”, Abyss and Apex. [poem] (Fall Issue) (http://www.abyssapexzine.com/2012/01/ledas-daughter/)
    2011 “Strict Nominalism”, Chiaroscuro 49. [poem]. (http://chizine.com/strict_nominalism.htm)
2011 “One Quarter Gorgon”, Chiaroscuro 47. [poem]

  2. Hey there :) Would you mind including my book, Postcolonialism and Science Fiction (Palgrave Macmillan, 2011)? It was published in December 2011. I know Amazon has the date as January 2012, but I’ve been trying to get them to change it as it was published December 15 in print and December 30th as an ebook. I think I’m eligible as I’m Canadian, and the book looks at a LOT of Canadian SF…

    • Ah, excellent. Thank you, I’ll put it in :)

As a note for anyone else who wants to add non-fiction, it is permissible, and I will add it. Please note though that on the Aurora ballot any non-fiction critical studies, or other non-fiction work falls under the “Best Related Work” category and competes for votes with magazines, anthologies, single author collections and a host of other publication types.

  3. There is also the Graphic Novel category. Here’s a couple for that:

Sweet Tooth Volume 3: Animal Armies by Jeff Lemire DC Comics-Vertigo

Imagination Manifesto Volume 3 by GMB Chomichuk, John Toone, James Rewucki-Alchemical Press

  4. Thank you so much for adding the poetry and song category that has been missing in the SF Canada database!

I’m not sure yet how we are going to handle the missing 2011 fan wiki there.

  5. There are no entries for art and artist here or on the Canadian SF database (although there used to be… )

Please add Costi Gurgu, for his incredible artwork on the cover of my latest book, Outer Diverse (Starfire World Syndicate)

    Cheers,
    Nina Munteanu

  6. Hi folks, can you change the link to my name under the “novel” category from “www.thepassionatewriter.com” to “www.ninamunteanu.com”. Many thanks for your hard work to produce this comprehensive list! Thank you!

    Cheers,
    Nina Munteanu

    • Hi Nina,

I checked and it seems to be set up that way already. It’s entirely possible that that is one of the amendments I made yesterday after reviewing the current list over at the Canadian SF Database, In any case, it;s currently set to “www.ninamunteanu.com”, as requested.

  8. Can I suggest that the post be updated with a “Table of Contents” that links to the header of each individual section? It’s a real pain when you’re looking for one of the later sections and have to scrrrrrroooooooollllllllllll….. past the earlier ones to get there.

    Thanks!

    • You know, it’s funny you should ask, because I’ve been trying to put that in since this morning when I finally got the WP HTML coder to load properly (I think it was an issue with my computer, not WP) :)

The template’s HTML input is a touch … finicky, so I’m having some issues implementing the change, but I hope to have it arranged sometime today.

      Michael

  9. You might consider updating the link under Fan Organizational for VCON 36 to the following:

“Kieth Lim, Cindy Turner and Jenni Merrifield”, Executive, VCon 36. September-October 2011 [Vancouver]”

The chair and co-chairs really worked as a collective team on this one and Cindy and Jenni deserve their fair share of the credit.

  10. Here’s two other “Fan Organizational” items for you:

Serena Reynolds, Organizer, Meetup Groups “BC Browncoats – Flans of Whedon” (http://www.meetup.com/BC-Browncoats/) and “Creative Geeks Society” Meetup Group (http://www.meetup.com/GeekCraft/). Regular gatherings throughout 2011. [Vancouver]

Serena is an awesome organizer of Geeky events. She has arranged events through one or both of these groups almost every Friday plus other dates here and there.

  11. Missing entries:

    Thanks
    Mary Choo
